Savoring Autumn: A Gourmet BBQ Experience with Borderless House Community

Welcome back to Borderless House!

Today we’ll delve into more exciting community information from Borderless House Kansai.

In this blog, we’re spotlighting yet another engaging event for our residents – the ‘BBQ Networking Event’ held last November. This BBQ gathering, which saw enthusiastic participation from 15 residents, including both international and Japanese members, was a resounding success!

Let’s dive into a quick recap of the day’s lively happenings.

BBQ Networking Event Report

At this event, members from five different houses came together, making it a great chance to meet new friends from beyond our own houses.

The event was truly international! We had people joining from Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Australia, Mexico, France, Austria, Hungary, and many other places.

We were really happy to have our residents’ friends join in too. It made the event even more fun for everyone.

Our BBQ took place at Expo ’70 Park in Osaka. We had a lovely sunny autumn day, and the park’s fall leaves were just gorgeous. It couldn’t have been better!

Once we all said hello to each other, it was time to start the BBQ. Chopping veggies, grilling meat – everyone did a great job. Living in a share house really shows; our teamwork was amazing!

At the BBQ, while we were eating, everyone talked about what life is like in their own share houses.

It was really interesting because we all live in different houses. We shared tips on how to make living together more enjoyable, using our own experiences. This kind of chat, which is really special to Borderless House, made the day even more fun.

After we finished the BBQ, we all went for a walk in the beautiful, green park to enjoy the autumn scenery.

It felt like we had known each other for a long time, even though we had just met that day. Everyone was saying things like, “I had a great time!” and “Thank you for inviting me!” It was a day filled with lots of smiles.

In Borderless House Kansai, we’ve had lots of different events!

We plan to tell you more about what we do in our blog posts coming up. We’d be really happy if you keep an eye out for our new updates!

Introduction to Kansai Area, Japan ▏Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe

Back in the days when Tokyo was called Edo and the nation was still un-unified, the Kansai region was where all the economic, technological, diplomatic, industrial, and cultural development happened. Whether it be the imperial court at Kyoto or the main trading ports at Osaka and Kobe, Japan truly started in these regions and still holds massive importance in Japanese, and even Asian, culture, even after almost 2,000 years.

After Tokyo, these are the most popular tourist, developing, and economical areas in Japan. Therefore, many cultural locations, universities, and global companies reside here. With easy access to transportation and their close vicinity to each other, it is common for both locals and tourists to commute between these cities on a daily basis.

Osaka

Starting at its center around Osaka – Umeda Station, you will leave the station and be taken aback by the glorious and grand skyscrapers surrounding it. A great way to start getting familiar with the city is to visit the Umeda Sky Building and view the city from its 170m high viewing platform. Around the station, you can find many different shopping areas, many of them to the east. Like the Hankyu-east shopping street, Izuma-no-Hiroba, the Tenjinbashisuji shopping street, or the Dotonbori, with the famous running man sign, further south!

Hosting both the Osaka international airport and the Kansai international airport, while also having great long-distance shinkansen trains and highway busses, Osaka is in a fantastic location for further travels inside the country. With many low-cost flights, you can take trips wherever and whenever you want.
Culturally, Osaka hosts many memorable locations. Osaka castle, once the largest and grandest castle in the country, lies just a few minutes away from Umeda.

And on one of the artificial islands on the west part of the city, lies the Universal Studios Japan park! Directly connected with its own train station, it is a perfect destination for all movie fans. Take time to also enjoy its more peaceful locations, like a picnic in the tranquil Ryokuchi park, or walk along the green and great Yodo river!

Kyoto

For over 1,000 years, Kyoto has been the capital of Japan. Having been so vital to the culture and politics, it has been spared from a lot of the damage and degradation other modern cities have. Because of this, many shrines, temples, and other structures are hundreds of years old but still kept fresh and clean.
Around Kyoto station, there are various clothing stores and shopping malls, especially around the Kyoto tower. Outside of that, there are small shopping streets scattered all over the city, like the Teramachi shopping district accessible via subway or bus.

In this city lies some of Japan’s most historically famous locations. Here lies the famous Kinkaku-Ji, The golden pavilion, the Kyoto imperial palace; home of the emperor for centuries, Senbon Torii; the thousand Torii Gate, Heian Shrine; build to celebrate the cities 1100th birthday, and the great Kiyomizu-Dera; a great temple complex with its famous wooden balcony. Nearby to Kiyomizu-Dera, you can also find the Sanneizaka and Nineizaka area. This entire area is built to look like old samurai-era buildings, and many of them are still the same ones from that period.

But that does not mean all in Kyoto are historical buildings and shrines. For non-historical scenery, there is the Arashiyama Bamboo forest; a stunning walking path in the middle of a bamboo forest, and the nearby Arashiyama monkey park as well! The local Kyoto city zoo, Funaokayama Park, with peaceful zen-like isolation, the Toei Kyoto studio park; home of so many old samurai era films, with many performances made by local samurai! Or take a lovely relaxing stroll along the great Kamo River, an especially beautiful location during sunny summer days.

Kobe

Home of the world-renowned Kobe beef and the 7th largest city in Japan, Kobe has, among Osaka, being the two most historically important ports in Japan. During the Meiji period, Kobe became one of the biggest ports for western industrial and economical research, so even today, Kobe has a visible mix of Japanese and western architecture in many of its districts. Especially in the Kitano area, which used to hold the foreign diplomats and merchants. Many of Japan’s industrial powerhouses lie here as well. Companies like Kobe Steel, Kawasaki Shipbuilding, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

While being an industrial city, there are many benefits to living here. From its harbor, there are many short-distance ferry rides and several cruise lines going all over Japan and Asia. Take a relaxing boat trip over a weekend to places like Kyushu, Hokkaido, or even to other countries like Taiwan and South Korea! Also accessible, is the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge, which leads to the great island of Honshu.

Some of the local hotspots among locals and tourists are the Arima onsen, a historical hot spring resort that is still considered one of the best hot springs in western Japan, and the breathtaking Nunobiki Herb Garden, which lies high up the mountains, so whether you want to view the city night lights, or see as far away as Osaka during the day, this is a fantastic option for a relaxing trip.

BORDERLESS HOUSE KOBE-MOTOMACHI1

With these areas being so varied and grand, it is difficult to mention or guide anyone to all their unique locations. But hopefully, this guide has given some more clarity over what each area has to offer. Since all these three areas are great tourist locations and often deal with global industries, Using only English is not such a big hindrance as it is in many other Japanese cities. Ask locals or any information desk in these areas and they will likely have a huge array of guides and tips for any first-timers around!
Enjoy, and stay safe!

We held the international exchange party and cultural study workshop in Osaka!

Hello, this is an event report from Borderless House Kansai!

This time we had a bit special event at Borderless House Osaka Tamastukuri on the last day of Golden Week! There were 2 parts on this event !!

1st. The workshop with Korean tenants and Japanese college students who have Korean background

The theme of the study group is “the difference between Japan society and Korean society”
Both countries are seem to be similar, but there are a lot of different points!

Borderless House is a share house where people with various backgrounds live together, cross-border encounter, and can touch a lot of new values. That is a different point between Borderless House and other share house.

Of course not only for tenants, but also for those who do not yet know the world view of Borderless House, we would like them to meet new people through the Borderless House and get a chance to have a wider world view!

That is the reason why we decided to hold the study group by Korean tenants and Japanese college students who have Korean background.

Since it was the first time to be held this event, we had a discussion with a casual agenda such as ‘the difference of delivery service’,’the difference of living cost’ .

Even if it was a short time and some of them got a little nervous, everyone actively participates in the discussion in both language Japanese and Korean.

2nd. Borderless House Kansai International Party

We also held a party with Borderless House Osaka-TamastukuriBorderless House Osaka-Tsuruhashi 1Borderless House Osaka-Toyonaka 1 tenants!

Everyone enjoyed the conversation while having a delicious meal with tenants of other share houses.

From everyone who participated in the party of Borderless House for the first time, I could get lots of nice comments below!

‘I thought I understand a little about the differences between the lives of Japan and Korea but I was able to learn lots of things for myself that was surprisingly different.’

‘Occasionally, the other party’s words were hard to hear or my words did not pass well, but I think I understood most of the content by explaining with letters and gestures. ‘

‘Since there are a lot of people from various nationalities, I felt like I was not in Japan. I thought that it was purely wonderful that the people were having a meal together in one place. It was a lot of fun for me! ‘

‘Since I have few opportunities to speak with people from various countries, that kind of environment is good chance to study myself.’

As a Borderless house, we are going to make many new encounters and exchange cultures for our tenants.
We also would like to make opportunities to know about us for those of you who do not yet know Borderless House or are interested in our house, but can not take a step forward!

Borderless House in Kansai area, vacancy is just a few left!  Why don’t you join the Borderless House and enjoy cross-border encounter and intercultural exchanges?

Borderless House Osaka Tamatsukuri –opening celebration party was held!

Greetings to all! This is Chang, a staff from Borderless House Kansai. On 11th February Saturday, we threw a potluck party with the tenants from 4 different houses,at our brand new <Borderless House Osaka Tamatsukuri>!! Here is a report about it along with the photos taken! Many of the tenants in <Borderless House Osaka Tamatsukuri> are share house beginners, and this was the very first house event held at the house. And so…we let the party begin with self-introduction session! A little bit of strained look in everyone’s face…seems like more ice breaking needed? After the self-introduction was the game session! The tenants teamed up as each house. We prepared 3 different kinds of games, and a big prize for the winner team: “rent discount ticket”!!! The first game: ping pong match on an international standard ping-pong table! Everybody frantically chases the ball for the rent discount ticket! Looks like everybody is enjoying themselves! Ice breaking succeeded?  🙂 The second game: the world wide famous JENGA! Considering its simplicity in rules, we thought each JENGA game will finish in a flash… but no! All our tenants are such good players, each game went on for at least 30 minutes! Look at everyone’s faces! So serious! And this JENGA tower…look how tall it ended up as, impressive! This has to be some professional level! After the 2 ice breaking games…the final game: pop-up pirate game!! All the participants got way more excited, as the winner team of this game wins the prizes! So which house was the lucky team that won the 1st prize eventually?? These two big boys!! The second prize winners were these lovely ladies! The prizes: a set of aroma oil and diffuser machine! (Good thing there are more female tenants in this house!) The third prize winners were these two fashionistas: 30 bars of takoyaki-flavour umaibo snacks!!! (Takoyaki –a dumpling with octopus pieces inside, dipped in a sauce; Osaka’s comfort food!) Not only the game sessions have ended in a great success, but also the tenants that participated have brought us a variety of delicious international dish and desserts! Korean bibim guksu noodles, gyoza, Vietnamese spring rolls, takoyaki, and sushi rolls…all this wonderful collaboration of multicultural food is also the perks of living in an international share house!  Everyone had a good talk and laughter over a table full of international food. This event became a great opportunity for both the tenants from Borderless House in Osaka and Kyoto (more than an hour apart by train!) to get together and mingle! The event ended in a big success, thanks to all of the participants! We hope to see you at the next event 🙂 Now there are a limited number of vacancies at <Borderless House Osaka Tamatsukuri> after only 1 month since the opening! Please contact us if you would like to join us! HOUSE EXCHANGE Shinpei Osaka to Seoul

Hi, this is BORDERLESS HOUSE in Osaka! One of our tenants, Shinpei went to Seoul with House exchange program. He said he is very interested in Korean cultures, so he is thinking about going to Korea all the time. Since he is Living in Osaka Toyonaka1 House with a Korean house Mate, he is getting interested in Korean cultures. So this time, he went to Korea, and Stay in Mapo2 House in Seoul from 2nd of Dec to 8th of Dec.   <He is eating Samgepsal, Korean BBQ>   <In front of Sejongdeawang statue>   Here is the comments from him! Q1. Why did you apply for the house exchange program? I really wanted to go to Korea, and when I heard about this program, I thought it will be much very to go there with this program since I can experience more real Korean cultures than I go there with my friends or by myself. Even though I wanted to go to Korea, I did not know about Korea well, so I do not want to go there for only short travel. I wanted to do Deep travel and to have rich Experience. Especially, I can stay there for FREE, so why not? lol   Q2. How was your trip? If I say it in a word, it is very similar between Korea and Japan. I already told you, I am very interested in their life, and culture, I kept attention to everything like their fashion, atmosphere of the street, buildings, cars, CM, and so on! It is just same as Japan. And when I went to book store, I was very surprised since the Japanese book was No. 1! Lol At the same time, I found the different things; there are lots of cafes, and they use credit card a lot Wi-Fi is everywhere in Korea! Also, transportation fee like taxi or bus is very cheap compare to japan.   When I found like this, it was very interesting.   3. What is the most memorable episode? I am not sure that this story is an episode or not, but the thing is that I met my roommate, Han! He brought me the club, pub, and restaurants, and we talked a lot! He lived in Japan, so he already known about how to speak Japanese, and Japanese cultures. Especially, I was able to understand about the education, and job hunting because of him.   4. Do you have any comments? I can not say about my house exchange program without Han! Since he was my roommate, I was able to enjoy this program I guess. I mean I can not speak any Korean, but my roommate, Han speaks Japanese, and we get along well. So it is very important to match the share house and the house mates!   I really appreciate it since I had really good time, and great experiences there! Thank you !!!   What a great experience! If you are interested in this program, please check the details of House Exchange Program HERE!
