Make great use of non-standard vegetables! Wagashi(Japanese sweets) making event at Kyoto Kamigamo House!

Hello, this is Suguru from Borderless House.

One month passed from “the Kimono dressing event” that ended in a great success.

“Wagashi(Japanese sweets) making ” Event was held at Borderless House Kyoto Kamigamo on June 4th.”

Thanks to the cooperation of Dekovege Cafe(でこべじカフェ) from Kyoto University, we were able to hold it.

There are some vegetables that can not be sold in shops because of its appearance such as “shape is irregular”, “too big”, “too small”. We call the vegetables “non-standard vegetables”. Dekovege Cafe(でこべじカフェ) buys the non-standard vegetables and regularly holds a cafe and cooking classes in various place.

On the day, a total of 31 people come to the event – not only tenants of Kyoto Kamigamo House, but people from other houses as well as neighbors participated.

They tried to make Dorayaki and Ichigo Daifuku!

*Dorayaki – pancakes stuffed with sweet bean paste

*Ichigo Daifuku – consisting of a strawberry inside ‘daifuku’, which is a rice cake stuffed with sweet bean paste.

(In this time, we cooked tomatoes jam instead of sweet bean paste)

I will introduce the whole Wagashi making event (including Tea party and Drawing relay competition ) with photographs!

Kyoto Kamigamo House style!? Using nicknames makes each other close.

First of all, we worked on 3 teams; making Droayaki dumpling bean pasteDorayaki dough making, and strawberry Daifuku team.

It started to introduce themselves.

In order to complete the cooking, team work is necessary more than anything!

However … It is difficult for both Japanese and foreigners to remember their names….

To solve the problem, we used Kyoto Kamigamo House style which is a way to call each other with a nickname. Although there are more than 20 people in the House, using nicknames made each other close and easy to memorize their names.

For example, there are some humorous nicknames, one of tenants is from Italy and the first name begins with “Chi” so that her nickname is “cheese“. The other one is “Natto Man” because he eat natto(fermented soybeans) every day in every meals. Moreover, Flo is included in his name, so that he is called “furo(Bath in Japanese)” !

Calling with a nickname made each other close, soon after self-introduction, one team took self-shots!

After the self-introduction, let’s cooking!

It looks ugly, but taste is good!

Start cooking with the guidance of Dekovege Cafe staff!

There are lots of vegetables that are thrown away when their shape is ugly, but the taste is good!
We cooked using such vegetables in this event!

One of tenants interpreted the menu described in English to a neighbor!

Most of tenants often cook their own meals. However there are a lot of delicate works in making sweets, so that neighbors and staff of Dekovege cafe helped and taught them.

All of participants were concentrating on the explanation of the staff!

Have you successfully made the shape of Daifuku well?

Everyone in the Dorayaki dough making team!

Finally completed!

After cooking, they ate Wagashi that they made together!

Ichigo Daifuku that we made together is delicious.

I enjoyed making the sweets with tenants of the share house!

There are a lot of voices that satisfy the making of Wagashi (Japanese sweets)!

We really appreciate Dekovege Cafe that gave us kindly guidance!

Who did you make a mistake? Drawing relay competition that was a great success

At the end of the tea party, “Team competing drawing relay contest” was held.

The rules are simple!

Members of each team decide numbers from 1 to 8. First of all, No. 1 person can see a subject and draw the picture. Next, connect the picture to the direction No. 2, No.3…., and the last person (No.8) guess what the theme is and answer.

The subject was “rhinoceros

This was the third term game and all three teams are at the top, so everyone was seriously working towards winning!

Rhinoceros(No.1)

Rhinoceros…….?(No.4)

???(No.7)

And the answer of Droayaki dumpling bean paste team is ..

“”””Unicorn “””
That was so funny we couldn’t stop laughing!

Is the picture strange from this point?

Come on!~ Daniel ~ !!

After answering, everyone check where they were getting funny!

It is a game that everyone in the team cooperates and gets the correct answer.

While I was in charge of the moderator, I was pleased to see the situation where everyone was working hard and looked fun with team members!

Finally, it was the time to announce the result of this game!

The victorious team is……………….

Dorayaki dough making team!

Ichigo Daifuku team in 2nd place!

Thanks to S-san (middle photo) who was 88 years old, this team made it to the place!

As you know the funny answer, Droayaki dumpling bean paste team is 3rd place!

In this event, we learned that there are many vegetables that are discarded if the shape is ugly and non-standard. And, even if the Japanese person, it was a nice experience that made Wagashi with such vegetables!

Thank you again for the cooperation of Dekovege Cafe san!

Also, “multi-generation and multicultural communication” that was another purpose of this event.

I think that it was good opportunities to tell own thoughts to the other party with communication that  is not only in languages such as English and Japanese, but also through body language.

Borderless House Kyoto Kamigamo wants to grow with the community while cooperating with tenants and local residents! We are planning to held fun events for both our tenants and neighbors in the future!

HOUSE EXCHANGE Sawako Taipei to Seoul

House Exchange from Taipei to Seoul!

Hello, this is Share House Borderless House!

One of our tenants in Taipei, Sawako has been to Seoul for a week by house exchange program!

She has shared very fabulous pictures taken in Seoul after a trip.

Why don’t we look around how was her trip from Taipei to Seoul together?

Hello, all!

My name is Sawako and I am currently staying in Borderless House Taipei.

I got a short break in this May and I decided to visit Seoul for the break!

I had stayed in one of houses of Borderless House Seoul in Hongdae area.

I hope you like my comment and pictures what I saw and felt in Seoul!

The best thing I got from this trip is Friends.

I visited Seoul by Free House Exchange program of Borderless House,

and they gave me an opportunity to stay in one of share houses in Seoul during my trip.

It was quite short term staying, but I became really close to all the housemates

who stayed with me in Seoul!

Even though they have their own schedule during weekdays, they always helped me a lot.

We had visited some famous places such as palaces, park etc.

This picture is taken at the park located near Han river.

It was so cool during the night time.

I heard that it is very famous to have Chi-Maek at the park of Han River, isn’t it?

I am very satisfied with this trip I had in Seoul.

I could take a lot of pictures during this trip, and those were all awesome!

Since I do not have to search for a place to stay during this trip,

I could save time for planning the trip.

I think I could enjoy this trip more than before, because of Free House Exchange program!

I usually spent time with my housemates during the trip.

I wore kind of Han-bok which is traditional cloth of Korea in this picture.

It looks like cute one-piece type of dress, isn’t it?

I liked this cloth so much, and I never thought that this is kind of Han-bok!

It was so happy to meet many new people in Seoul and become friends.

And having delicious food was also one of delightful things which I could do in Seoul.

I am not sure when can I have a break and have a trip to Seoul or other places,

I hope to get an opportunity to stay in another Borderless House located in another country

once more. Thanks, Borderless House!

We held the international exchange party and cultural study workshop in Osaka!

Hello, this is an event report from Borderless House Kansai!

This time we had a bit special event at Borderless House Osaka Tamastukuri on the last day of Golden Week! There were 2 parts on this event !!

1st. The workshop with Korean tenants and Japanese college students who have Korean background

The theme of the study group is “the difference between Japan society and Korean society”
Both countries are seem to be similar, but there are a lot of different points!

Borderless House is a share house where people with various backgrounds live together, cross-border encounter, and can touch a lot of new values. That is a different point between Borderless House and other share house.

Of course not only for tenants, but also for those who do not yet know the world view of Borderless House, we would like them to meet new people through the Borderless House and get a chance to have a wider world view!

That is the reason why we decided to hold the study group by Korean tenants and Japanese college students who have Korean background.

Since it was the first time to be held this event, we had a discussion with a casual agenda such as ‘the difference of delivery service’,’the difference of living cost’ .

Even if it was a short time and some of them got a little nervous, everyone actively participates in the discussion in both language Japanese and Korean.

2nd. Borderless House Kansai International Party

We also held a party with Borderless House Osaka-TamastukuriBorderless House Osaka-Tsuruhashi 1Borderless House Osaka-Toyonaka 1 tenants!

Everyone enjoyed the conversation while having a delicious meal with tenants of other share houses.

From everyone who participated in the party of Borderless House for the first time, I could get lots of nice comments below!

‘I thought I understand a little about the differences between the lives of Japan and Korea but I was able to learn lots of things for myself that was surprisingly different.’

‘Occasionally, the other party’s words were hard to hear or my words did not pass well, but I think I understood most of the content by explaining with letters and gestures. ‘

‘Since there are a lot of people from various nationalities, I felt like I was not in Japan. I thought that it was purely wonderful that the people were having a meal together in one place. It was a lot of fun for me! ‘

‘Since I have few opportunities to speak with people from various countries, that kind of environment is good chance to study myself.’

As a Borderless house, we are going to make many new encounters and exchange cultures for our tenants.
We also would like to make opportunities to know about us for those of you who do not yet know Borderless House or are interested in our house, but can not take a step forward!

Borderless House in Kansai area, vacancy is just a few left!  Why don’t you join the Borderless House and enjoy cross-border encounter and intercultural exchanges?

Great success with neighbors! Kimono dressing and Tea party event! @ Kyoto Kamigamo House

Hello, this is Suguru from Borderless House. “Kimono dressing & Tea party” event was held at Kyoto Kamigamo House on 13th of May. Dressing of kimonos is a valuable experience, so it generally costs around 4000 yen a day per person. However, this time, thanks to the cooperation of Kyoto Kimono Kikaku-san, the participation fee was 500 yen! We really appreciate Kyoto Kimono Kikaku-san! As such a wonderful event, gathering 21 tenants in total from all 5 Borderless Houses in Osaka and Kyoto! There was also an exchange with local people in the Tea party after the Kimono dressing. 12 neighbors of the Kyoto Kamigamo House took part in it. It was an exciting event from the beginning to the end. I will introduce the whole Kimono dressing & Tea party event with photographs!

What I find the struggle point of wearing Kimono

Male tenants who came from overseas were struggling very hard on the Tabi(socks) to be worn for the first time. It was a funny story that one of tenants said “Where is my ring finger, where?!” On the other hand, female tenants tried to make Obi(sash belt) by themselves! There are various shapes of Kimono Obi like ribbon.

Thanks to the guidance of the Kyoto Kimono Kikaku-san, everyone was able to dress in the kimono beautifully!

In fact, some neighbors participated the event as a “Kimono dressing” volunteer!

One of our lovely neighbors is O-san often come to Kyoto Kamigamo House. She remember all tenant’ names and nicknames. And then she participated as a volunteer this time because she wanted to become a power even a little for the tenants.

Let’s take a picture!

It was the first time for most of tenants to wear kimonos by themselves, so after the dressing they were excited and took a lot of photos

It was a “Natto pose” thought by a foreign tenant who loves natto too much and eats it in the morning, afternoon and evening!

Walking around “Kamigamo Shrine”, one of the world cultural heritage

After dressing, we divided into 3 teams and looked around Kamigamo Shrine. This shrine is located 3 minutes on foot from the Kyoto Kamigamo House.

Everyone (the participants and the staff) took a commemorative photo in front of the gateway of the shrine!

This place for ritual cleaning of hands and mouth with water when visiting shrines.

Tea party was a great success! The beginning of a conversation is Korean dramas!?

After the walking around, 12 neighbors welcomed the tenants at the Kamigamo House! At the beginning, thee neighbors were nervous and had the following feelings of uneasiness. “I do not know how to start a talking” ”I can not speak English”  However, It started a talking with a casual word! For example, one neighbor said to a Korean tenant, “I love Korean dramas!” “Oh! Which drama do you like!?” the tenant asked her. “I think that drama …” In this way, good communication at the tea party was born one after another. Those who told the tenants his history of the Kamigamo area that he was born and raised, while using gesture hand gestures. Some girls also positively visited the tenants to learn English and Korean.
The fun time went by quickly. To the announcement of the end time, I got a lot of regretful words such as “It’s too early one hour.” And then, some of participants asked us “When is the next event? Please tell me as soon as you decided” We received a lot of voices that are looking forward to the next event as well. We would like to plan an event like this one again! The photo with a big smile! Thank you very much for all neighbors who came this time!

Many pleasant comments from the participants!

It was fulfilling for the first time to have a Kimono dressing experience. I learned a lot about Kamigamo area from the neighbors, so I want to know more Kamigamo while continuing to interact with them. W-san from Japan It was a lot of fun to talk with the other houses tenants. I hope to participate if such a collaborative event is next time. R-san from Japan I would like you to organize Japanese culture events. I want to learn more about how to tie belts(Obi), please teach me! A-san from Germany We received many pleasant comments from tenants who participated in this event. As feeling with traditional Japanese culture here, there is a good environment that Kamigamo House can do international exchange × local community exchange. Borderless House Kyoto Kamigamo wants to grow with the community while cooperating with tenants and local residents! Finally, for the success of this event, thank you very much for the Kyoto Kimono Kikaku-san from Kyoto University. Thank you for reading our blog, well then see you next time! HOUSE EXCHANGE Franz Tokyo to Seoul

House Exchange from Tokyo to Seoul!

Hello, this is Share House Borderless House!

One of our tenants in Tokyo, Franz has been to Seoul for a week by house exchange program!

He gave us so many adorable pictures and comments what he felt in Seoul.

Why don’t we look around his first travel to Seoul?

Hello, my name is Franz and I am from Sweden.

Since I am staying in Tokyo from a few months ago,

I always wanted to visit another countries near Japan.

When I heard that I can stay in one of shared houses of Borderless

in Kansai, Seoul and Taipei by FREE HOUSE EXCHANGE program,

I thought this is really great chance for me.

I was planning to visit Seoul from quite long time ago,

so I decided to visit Seoul with this wonderful program.

I could stay one of shared houses in Seoul for free,

and I was really feel comfortable to make a plan for my first trip.

A staff of Borderless House Seoul recommend me some houses

where I can stay during the term I visit Seoul, and I chose Hongdae 5 House.

They were my housemates during my stay in Seoul!

They were so nice and helpful.

I feel so friendly with them, although I stayed there only for a week.

I thought it is possible to be real family with unknown people in Borderless House.

I hope to meet them again, if I can have chance to visit Seoul once again!

I really loved to visit many famous attractions in Seoul.

I could see many sites in Seoul with many recommendation from my housemates.

It feels so nice when I visit a country for the first time!

Although I am staying in Japan now, I would like to visit Seoul for a long time someday!

I would like to say that Han-river was the best place in Seoul where I visited.

Hongdae 5 House where I stayed during the term I stayed in Seoul,

has really good access to anywhere in Seoul.

Especially for Han-river and Hongdae, those were really close to the house.

It was so convenience to visit all around Seoul by subway line No.2 from the house.

This dish called 짜장면 and 탕수육!

My housemates highly recommend this dish to try.

It was so nice that I could try many dish in one menu!

And I got surprised that it delivered so fast.

I felt it came just we cut the call for taking an order!

I really want to say thank you to all my housemates.

Although they have their work or schedule, because they are actually ‘living’ in Korea,

they always helped me to find good places where I should visit in Seoul,

and they took me to good restaurants for dinner!

I think the best opportunity for this Free House Exchange Program is that

I can make local friends who actually living in Seoul.

When I travel somewhere, I could visit places where are famous for sightseeing only.

But this time, I am sure that I could feel as many things as I can feel in Seoul as a tourist.

Thank you Borderless!

I think it is really different to go trip by house exchange program or not.

I could make many good friends who are staying in Osaka Share House.

I am sure that it will be the best thing I can get from this tenants only program!

Because of House Exchange Program, I could feel many more things

than when I did not use this program!

When I had trip without this program, it was nice enough.

But when I had trip with this program, I think I feel and experience

many more things than that time.

I could concentrate to make my own plan because I applied House Exchange Program.

I would like to say thank you to all staffs in Borderless House Seoul and Kansai.

They were so helpful and nice, because of them this trip became the best trip I ever had!

This is one of my housemates in Osaka!

It was really nice to meet many people who are actually staying in Osaka.

During my trip in Osaka, they always helped me a lot.

Since they are locals, they advised me a lot about the places where I have to visit

and foods which I have to try in Osaka!

I think having dinner is the best and easiest way to become closer!

When I had a first dinner with my housemates in Osaka, I was so shy.

But it makes me closer with them day by day!

It was so happy to get closer with my housemates in Osaka!

If someone asks me to recommend food which he or she has to try in Japan,

I would like to recommend Takoyaki! Takoyaki was really awesome!

I had it many times in Korea, but it was really different having it in Japan!

You have to try it if you are planning to visit Japan! Do not miss it!

What real life in a share house is like @Kyoto-Kamigamo Tenant Story①

Hello! I am Nami, and I live at Borderless House Kamigamo for one month. For four times in total, I will blog about what I learned from living in a share house. I hope that some of you will become interested in the “share house” concept through this blog, and even catch a glimpse on what real life in a share house is like. Borderless House Kyoto-Kamigamo has just opened on March 20th, and there are events taking place pretty much every day. The foreign tenants have some kind of party every single day – sometimes I wonder where they get that much energy… but mostly, their positive attitude really cheers me up.   We’ve had various kinds of parties until now. For example, welcome parties when a new housemate moves in. And even on regular weekdays, it’s a lot of fun just having dinner or a few drinks together. Generally, everyone cooks their own dinner. But since we live together with Japanese, Korean, French, Italian, German and Australian housemates, there is such a huge variety of different foods! Once, our Korean housemate cooked a Korean dish called “jjigae” for everyone  Another time, the French guys treated us with some apple crumble. At Borderless House Kyoto-Kamigamo, we have lots of opportunities to learn about other cultures through food. My Korean housemate once saw the dish “Ton-jiru” (pork soup) shown on the Japanese TV show “shinya shokudou” (Midnight Diner) and got hungry, so we made it together! (By the way, I hadn’t even heard of the TV show Midnight Diner. And there were other times when my foreign housemates told me about certain foods they learned about from this anime or that manga, and I didn’t know what they were talking about!I actually learn a lot from them about Japanese TV shows or manga .)   But we do not only share our cultures through food! After dinner, we often watch Japanese anime or TV shows together, play cards, or talk about what our days were like, and just socialize by having a conversation.  For example, the latest anime marathon we had at Borderless House Kyoto-Kamigamo was “shokugekino souma” (Food Wars), an anime all about food. (Apparently, it’s a pretty popular manga from the magazine JUMP.) When playing cards, we always play games I have never seen in Japan before, so someone always has to explain the rules to me. At Borderless House Kyoto-Kamigamo, when someone comes home we always ask each other about our days or talk about what we did that day, so we never run out of things to talk about! (Even when you cook your dinner, someone approaches you and asks what you are making :D) Every day is fun in this house, and it feels just like home. (The ones sharing the same days off on the weekend have an even broader way of socializing! But I’ll talk about that some other time…)

So, do you have any concerns about living in a share house?

For example, many worry if they can properly communicate with the foreign tenants, or if they will be alright living with others. But above all, I think many worry about having to change their current lifestyle. The thought of having to change your daily school or work routine can discourage many from choosing to move to a share house. To be honest, I was one of those people.   But Borderless House Kyoto-Kamigamo took my worries away instantly. Without particularly changing my routine, I can interact with people from lots of different countries, and I feel so comfortable!   Of course, I am very busy with school, work, and other things, but there is no special time I have to be home or take a bath. So I can keep my own, usual routine while enjoying life in the share house! I strongly recommend you to live in a share house to meet new awesome friends and new cultures!! Then,i will be back with new great story soon!! <Borderless House Kyoto-Kamgamo> Borderless House  – Osaka/Kyoto area –

HOUSE EXCHANGE Jeanie Seoul to Tokyo

House exchange from Seoul to Tokyo!

Hello, this is Share house Borderless House!

Our tenant Jeanie gave us sweet review after house exchange program!

Please check it this review! 😀

Since I live in Korea, I decided that this was a good chance to explore other Asian countries.

Besides Korea,
the other Asian country that has always been at the top of my list to visit was Japan.

For this, the Borderless Share House free house exchange to Tokyo was a great opportunity!

Borderless Share House Japan has a lot of houses in Tokyo; in different areas of the city and of varying sizes.
So the first thing I did, was check out all the houses on the borderless website and do some research on which area of Tokyo I wanted to stay in, as well as consult with the borderless staff about which houses were available during the time I intended to stay in Japan.

After all the practical arrangement had been made, it was all smooth sailing from there.

I was only in Japan for 9 days, but it was great and very comforting to arrive and be greeted by the Japanese Borderless staff member, at the subway station nearby the house I was going to stay in.

As when you move into any Borderless house/apartment, I was given a tour of the house and the instructions I needed to know for my stay there (i.e. recycling, house rules), and the borderless staff member answered all the questions I had about my stay in Japan.

Since I was in only in Japan for 9 days I didn’t really have the opportunity to hang out that much with the other tenants of the house.

Most of them were workers and some where students, so they were also busy with their work and studies.

However those I did meet at the house were all really nice and curious to hear and learn, about my experience living in Korea and why I had chosen to come to Japan.

At the same time, my new Japanese housemates were also able to give me advice about the area in which we lived, as well as everything from transport to the best places to eat and shop in the local area.

During my time in Japan I not only stayed in Tokyo, I also when to Osaka and Kyoto.

Having Tokyo as my base for exploring Japan was great, because it meant that I could both start and finish my house exchange in Tokyo.

Not only was I able to visit Japan without spending a lot of money on accommodation,

I was also able to talk and interact with natives to Japan as well as other foreigners, while living with them in a share house – I truly believe that this, is the best and fastest way to gain insight into a country, its culture and its people.

I would definitely recommend the Borderless House exchange program.
Whether you want to study, do a language course or go on vacation to explore and learn about a new culture, this is a really good way to do it, because you immediately have to chance to meet and make friends with locals and other foreigners!

Find rooms for rent and flatmates in Taipei: 8 reasons to live in share house of BORDERLESS HOUSE

Hello everyone!! This is BORDERLESS HOUSE Taipei. Are you the one who is curious about the foreign culture? Are you finding flatmates to share daily life and learn from each other? Are you interested in learning foreign language? ……If so, the share house of BORDERLESS HOUSE will be a good choice for you!!

8 reasons to live in the Borderless House ▼▼▼

1. For Taiwanese, you can live with flatmates from different countries

Since our concept is to provide the opportunity to cultivate international cultural exchange, we try to balance the ratio of locals to foreigners 50:50. So, half of your flatmates will be foreigners, and you can experience the international environment  by simply living in a house without going abroad!

2. For Foreigners, you can live with many locals and adapt to local life more easily

If you come to Taiwan to learn Chinese and would like to explore the culture here, living with locals can help you know the culture deeper and get some tips about daily life you may not have in other places. Also it will be a good chance to put language skills into practice EVERYDAY!

3. The community is like a FAMILY

The people who live in the BORDERLESS HOUSE must have motivation for communicating with others and are eager to experience different cultures. As a result, this is a community which is created by people having the same goal or sharing the similar values. (For example, they want to improve the language or make friends from different countries!) Also we ask tenants to live at least one month so that you will have more chance to interact and hangout with your flatmates! ★See the sharing of one of our foreign tenants: Samuel

4. It’s convenient to go everywhere from the house

Our houses are located in Taipei city and mostly near the Taipei metro station, so it will usually take you less than 10 minutes to walk to house from the station! If you want to travel to other spots in Taipei, it’s also convenient to go by metro system. ★See the list of our share houses by area: Click here

5. Each house is equipped with basic facilities.

There are living room, dining room and kitchen in every house. In common space, we provide basic facilities such as rice cooker, refrigerator, microwave, washing machine, TV, WIFI, etc. In each room, there are air conditioner, desks, chairs, and beds, etc. You can bring a bed set by yourself or rent it from us (1,500 NTD just one time). That is to say, you can move in just with one luggage! You don’t have to worry about the basic facilities you need for daily life. ★See detailed information: About House Facilities
